C.S. Lewis's essay "Miracles" is a thoughtful and persuasive argument in favor of the possibility and actuality of miracles within a Christian framework. At its core, Lewis challenges the naturalist viewpoint, which posits that the universe is closed and that everything can be explained by natural laws, leaving no room for the supernatural, including miracles.

Lewis begins by defining a miracle as an event that interrupts the predictable laws of nature, brought about by a supernatural force or being. He argues that acknowledging the existence of miracles does not necessarily undermine the reliability of the natural world but rather points to the existence of a reality beyond our own. According to Lewis, miracles are not arbitrary or whimsical but serve specific purposes, such as revealing the character of God, confirming a message from God, or showing God's intervention in the world.

One of the key arguments Lewis makes is against the concept of "natural laws" being absolute. He suggests that natural laws describe what happens under certain conditions but do not dictate what must happen. Thus, if a new factor (such as a divine intervention) is introduced, the outcome might differ from the natural course, and this deviation would be what we call a miracle.

Lewis also tackles the issue of credibility, acknowledging that the claim of a miracle requires solid evidence due to its extraordinary nature. He examines historical accounts of miracles, particularly those described in the Christian Gospels, arguing that their credibility and the integrity of their witnesses lend support to the belief in miracles.

Throughout the essay, Lewis emphasizes that miracles are not merely violations of the natural order but are significant events that highlight the intersection of the natural and the divine. They are, in his view, a testament to the fact that the universe is not closed and that God is actively involved in the world.
