In my earlier video (   • Strange Magnets and Mesmerism: Unders...  ) about Mesmer and magnetism (an early form of hypnotism), I talked about Franz Mesmer, who developed a technique with magnets to put people into a trance. His methods became wildly popular but his methods were eventually debunked by a French Royal Commission and Mesmer disappeared into history. In this video, I tell you what happened next, including the rebranding of mesmerism as "hypnotism," how this all led to theories of hysteria in women in the late 1800s, and eventually how Freud came to Paris to learn from Charcot.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. I joined the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia in 2007, where my research and teaching are focused on social neuroscience.
