The CSIS Defending Democratic Institutions Project, as part of its Civics at Work Initiative, will host a conversation on The Business Case for Democracy alongside the Karsh Institute of Democracy on Thursday, May 2 at 1:00 PM ET. Distinguished speakers include Suzanne Spaulding, Director of the Defending Democratic Institutions Project and Senior Adviser for Homeland Security, and J. Michael Luttig, a distinguished fellow in law and democracy at the Karsh Institute, Former Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and former general counsel for Boeing. The conversation will be moderated by Melody Barnes, Executive Director of the Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia.

Democracy is neither invincible nor inevitable. What are the ways that the private sector can help us shape and strengthen democratic institutions, including the rule of law and the preservation of free speech? What responsibility do businesses have in helping strengthen the civic space? These are a few of the questions that will be addressed in this virtual event highlighting the important role of businesses in sustaining our democracy.
