Britain's House of Commons Speaker John Bercow, known for his fiesty temperament and florid style, has said he would stand down from the role.

His put-downs of misbehaving lawmakers, ranging from headmasterly to acid, have made him something of a cult figure among global television news audiences and on Brexit-following social media.

Known for his trademark ORDER holler, Bercow occupied the throne-like speaker's chair, positioned between government and opposition benches in parliament, since 2009.
