‘Left a good job in the city’… In 1971 Ike and Tina Turner released their own cover version of "Proud Mary," which proved to be just as successful as the original from
1969 from Creedence Clearwater Revival. It was penned by the band's frontman, John Fogerty, the song quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Little did Fogerty know that his creation would go on to captivate audiences across generations and become a defining piece of music history. The origins of "Proud Mary" trace back to a significant moment in John Fogerty's life. Following his discharge from the National Guard, Fogerty found himself in a celebratory mood. Armed with a guitar and a burst of inspiration, he began strumming chords that would shape the song's iconic blues-rock anthem. But two years later Ike and Tina Turner, a musical duo with their own distinctive style and sound, recognized the song's potential. They began performing their own rendition, infusing it with their unique blend of grit and funk. Tina's earthy and soaring vocals, combined with the revamped arrangement, breathed new energy into the already powerful track.
During their time as the opening act for the Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina witnessed firsthand the instant appeal their cover versions had for audiences. Songs like "Proud Mary," the Beatles' "Come Together," and the Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" showcased their ability to reimagine and reinterpret popular hits while staying true to their own artistic vision. Through the years, "Proud Mary" has remained an enduring classic, representing the dynamic nature of music and its ability to transcend boundaries. This Ike and Tina Turner performance is recorded at the tv-program “Van Speyk Show Of Liever De Lucht In”, in 1974.
