Here we have a first hand account from Herodotus, the ancient Greek father of history, where he describes to us the appearance of the vast Persian army as it crossed the Hellespont during the Xerxes second Persian invasion of Greece. He goes into great detail into the various groups of people mustered from all corners of the Persian empire. It gives us insight into how diverse this ancient Persian military actually was.
