Being self-employed can change your finances in many ways. For one, it means that you’ll want to keep track of how much you spend on things like supplies and even the number of miles you drive for your business. While you could try to do this on your own, there now several tools that make the task a lot simpler.

Among these tools is Hurdlr, which includes a number of features to help manage your business finances. With that, let’s take a closer look at Hurdlr and what it has to offer.

The first thing to know about Hurdlr is that there is a free version as well as a paid version

Hurdlr is free to download from App Store or Google Play store, and included some basic features you can access without spending anything. For example, if you just want a place to enter your business mileage and transactions manually, you can do that in Hurdlr as part of the free option. However, most people will likely want to try the paid version.

Hurdlr Premium comes at a cost of $7.99 or $60 if you pay for a full year upfront. You can either upgrade to Hurdlr Premium directly through the app or visit their website. Since the paid version of the app includes several features not found in the free version, we’ll be talking mostly about Hurdlr Premium from here on out.

Next up, with Hurdlr you can connect your various debit and credit card accounts and help you keep track of your business transactions and deductions

One of the key features of Hurdlr is the ability to automatically import transactions and label them as either personal or business. If this sounds similar to Quickbooks Self-Employed, that’s because it is. Funny enough, both apps also utilize a Tinder-like swipe system to quickly label transaction, although they are actually opposite of each other in terms of what swiping left or right means.

Also like Quickbooks, Hurdlr makes it even easier to keep up on transaction categorization by creating rules. You can select to have rules apply to only future purchases or have them retroactively do the work for you. Also helpful is the ability to categorize transactions in bulk — a feature I don’t believe Quickbooks self-employed’s app has. In all, Hurdlr can help ensure you don’t miss any business deductions you’re expenses entitle you to.

Also with your paid Hudlr account, you’ll have the option to automatically track your mileage and label each trip as either personal or business
Speaking of deductions, the miles you drive for your business can also earn you tax deductions. Of course that’s only the case when you properly log these trips. That’s where Hurdlr’s mileage tracking tool comes in.

By turning this feature on, the app will automatically record trips you tag, total up the mileage, and even show you how much of a deduction you could earn. However, since it’s unlikely that every drive you take is for business, the app makes it simple to once again swipe to label trips as personal if needed. Plus, in the event that you forget to turn on auto-tracking and need to add a trip later, you can always do so manually.

One somewhat hidden feature in Hurdlr’s app is their time tracker, which can come in handy when you’re timing certain tasks.
If, like me, you may not drive much for your business but do need to log how long you spend on certain tasks, it’s nice to know that a time tracker built into Hurdlr’s app. However, this ability isn’t prominently featured. To access it, you’ll want to hit the three dots at the top left side of the screen and then tap Time & Tasks. From there, just hit the clock icon to set up a new task.

Overall, Hurdlr has a number of features that make it a decent alternative to Quickbooks, although it does lack the same type of tax support the Quickbooks Tax Bundle includes

Both Hurdlr and Quickbooks Self-Employed will help you estimate your quarterly tax payments by looking at your business income and deductions. That said, with the tax bundle upgrade for Quickbooks, you can actually make these tax payments the service. No such ability exists for Hurdlr.

To be fair, however, the base price of Hurdlr does come in cheaper than Quickbooks, as Hurdlr is $7.99 a month compared to the regular $10 for Quickbooks Self-Employed and $17 for the tax bundle. Therefore, if you’re looking to save a bit of money, Hurdlr can be a good alternative. It really just comes down to which service and user experience you prefer.
