The Jeep Wrangler 4WD is a renowned off-road champion, but buyers love do-it-all dual-cab utes these days, so the storied American 4x4 brand created the Jeep Gladiator pick-up a few years ago.

Not to be confused with Russell Crowe dressed in Roman armour, the Gladiator is a rival for the best-selling Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, although it unusually doesn't offer a turbo-diesel engine option. And even the sole petrol engine on offer isn't turbocharged. But at least it's a V6.

Either way, in this expert review, Contributing Journalist Emily Agar discovers that while the top-spec 2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon can seemingly go anywhere you want, it's not necessarily cut out for family duties.

That's right; the Jeep ute might have classic looks and a non-plussed attitude up its sleeve, but it's expensive yet still doesn't have the safety equipment - or rating - that you'd want if you were to put your kids in the back seat.
