The Sky Pond Trail via Glacier Gorge in Rocky Mountain National Park is a winter hike that should be on every hiker’s must-do list. This 8.5-mile hike starts at the Glacier Gorge Trailhead and takes you through a picturesque landscape of alpine forests, rugged peaks, and frozen waterfalls, culminating in a breathtaking view of the Sky Pond, a serene alpine lake surrounded by towering cliffs. We hiked up a frozen waterfall and it was an unforgettable experience.

This 8.5-mile hike takes you over 3 alpine lakes: Loch Lake, Lake of Glass, and Sky Pond! During the winter, the trail is often covered in snow and ice, so it's important to bring the appropriate gear, including waterproof jackets and gloves, microspikes (like us) or cross-country skis, and ice axes (like us) or trekking poles. As you gain elevation, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging, but the stunning views of the surrounding peaks will keep you motivated. We even saw the wave-like features on the lakes which are made by strong winds.

As you near the top, you will have to navigate a rocky scramble to reach the Sky Pond, but the effort is well worth it. The frozen lake and the surrounding cliffs are truly a sight to behold. Overall, the Sky Pond Trail is a challenging, yet unforgettable winter hike that will leave you feeling accomplished and rejuvenated. With the stunning views, the wildlife and the serene atmosphere, it's perfect for those looking for a winter adventure, a nature lover and outdoor enthusiast.
