Fredersen commands Rotwang to give the robot Maria's appearance, intending to discredit her among the laborers. However, he is unaware of Rotwang's true plan to use the robot to destroy Metropolis and ruin both Fredersen and his son, Freder. Rotwang abducts Maria and transfers her likeness to the robot, then sends it to Fredersen. When Freder discovers the two embracing, he is convinced that it is the real Maria and falls into a state of prolonged delirium.
