Bossa nova is a genre of lyrical fusion between traditional Brazilian music - soft, lithe samba and American jazz, a new style in Portuguese lyrics.
Bossa nova began to become known and popular in the 1950s and 1960s (culminating in 1957 and 1963) on the tropical beaches of southern Rio de Janeiro, when a group of middle-class students , young artists and musicians come together to create a new sound. Therefore, bossa nova means "new trend".
