Voting begins for Maldives Parliament, watched by India and China vying for control of Indian Ocean

Voting commenced for the Maldives Parliament amid keen interest from India and China, each vying for control in the Indian Ocean region. President Mohamed Muizzu's political future hinges on the outcome of this crucial ballot.

The elections, held on Sunday, are pivotal for Muizzu, who has been leaning towards China, a stance that has heightened tensions with India. The strategic importance of the Maldives, situated strategically in the Indian Ocean, has made it a focal point for both regional powers.

Muizzu's presidency has seen a shift towards China, evident in his decision to remove Indian troops stationed in the country. However, securing a majority in Parliament might prove challenging for him, as some of his alliances have fractured, and new parties have entered the fray.

Six political parties and independent groups are contesting for 93 seats in Parliament, with 368 candidates in the running. This marks an increase from the previous Parliament, reflecting population growth.

With approximately 284,000 eligible voters, preliminary results are anticipated to be announced late Sunday.

Muizzu's election campaign, centered around the theme "India out," underscores his desire to reduce Indian influence, which he accuses his predecessor of fostering to the detriment of national sovereignty.

Tensions escalated further when Indian social media activists initiated a tourism boycott of the Maldives, in response to derogatory remarks made by Maldivian officials about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Despite strained relations with India, Muizzu has sought to strengthen ties with China, negotiating increased tourism and flights from the country. The Maldives' participation in China's "Belt and Road" initiative in 2013 underscores its growing ties with China and its broader geopolitical ambitions.

The outcome of the parliamentary elections will not only shape the political landscape of the Maldives but also have significant implications for the regional power dynamics in the Indian Ocean.
