Today we are discussing if my RAM 1500 with the 5.7 liter Hemi has the towing capacity to pull a mid sized fifth wheel camper trailer safely. The dry weight of the fifth is 7100 pounds so you would think My ram 1500 could tow it easily. but as I discuss in the video my truck isn't rated at the max 10,600 lbs but instead 8,000 lbs

The max tow rating of your pick-up truck is usually always based upon how it is spec'd out. so althought the 4th gen ram is marketed at 10,600 lbs, as my truck sits it's true tow rating is 8,000 lbs

this is also true for payload rating, ram claims for the 4th gen 1500 that it's max payload is 1,880 lbs. but for my truck is only 1,570lbs. so be careful with that.

Next I talk about why my ram can't tow this fifth wheel without being over loaded and it's to do with a payload and GVWR issue. these 1500 trucks are not rated with very high payloads and a fifth wheel camper trailer by design is going to put more of it's overall weight into the truck then a traditional ball hitch would. meaning that my truck as it sits could not tow a 7,100 lbs fifth wheel trailer.

If I was in a pitch and had to tow this thing 15km up the road would it hurt anything? probably not. But if I was going to be towing this trailer regularly for long distances I would not want to use my RAM 1500. you would probably be best with a 2500 that can deal with the added payload much better.

Anyways I hope you guys liked the video!
