Overtake presents one owners story of why he loves the E39 generation of BMW 5 series. Here we take a drive in his 523i with the M52TUB25 engine, equipped with a 5 speed manual transmission and experience what it’s like to enjoy driving one of these cars. The 523i is an almost forgotten about model nowadays, with the focus very much being placed upon the infamous M5 and the 530i and 540i models. However, as this owner shows, there is much fun to be found in all models, including this 523i with it’s naturally aspirated straight six petrol engine, which feels very analog in it’s driving experience when compared with the latest generation of BMW 5 series models such as the G30 generation.

The E39, or fourth generation of BMW 5 series, launched in 1995 and went on to win numerous group tests of executive cars at the time, with many heralding the car as the greatest executive car of all time. A title that some feel it still holds today. It certainly represents a period of magic in BMW’s history of making driver focused saloon (or sedan) cars.

When it came to petrol powered engines, the E39 came equipped with the choice between a range of straight six options or V8 and nothing less. All of which were offered with manual or automatic transmissions, meaning that keen drivers could choose to have a manual if they so desired. The M52 and M54 straight six engines are renowned for their driveability as well as their wonderful straight six soundtrack.

The E39 generation of 5 series was such a great car of its time that it is fascinating to see how well they stack up today.
