Many marine energy technologies, such as surge flaps or tidal turbines, need periodic maintenance to ensure they are working optimally for clean energy production. At Power-Up Point, autonomous underwater vehicles get charged up—using power generated from a wave energy converter—before going about their maintenance tasks on the sea floor.

Power-Up Point is one stop on Renewable Energy Discovery (REDi) Island, a 3D-animated experience that demonstrates the many roles water power can play in our clean energy future. REDi Island was developed by NREL with support from the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office.
