Since the first iteration in 1986, the BMW M3 has been rear-wheel drive, with an addictive balance and appetite for oversteer that few saloons can match. But over the years, the power has gone up, and the number of driven wheels has remained - until now. The M3 Competition xDrive is the first-ever four-wheel drive M3, and to see if it stacks up on track, we pitched it against the purest, simplest driving machine of all - a Caterham. Here in 360R guise, the British featherweight produces 180bhp, giving it a power-to-weight ratio advantage over the BMW.
