Nevada's NEWEST State Park : ICE AGE FOSSILS State Park in Las Vegas, Nevada

In this week's video we visit Nevada's newest State Park which just opened in January of 2024, called Ice Age Fossils State Park. It is located within the Tule Springs Fossil Beds on the North side of Las Vegas on Decatur.

The park is currently $3 per adult to enter and will soon be open Wed-Sundays in early March.


Just 20 min north of the las vegas strip is an area known as Tule Springs that contains one of the largest collections of ice age fossils in the world! Now these are not just any fossils but a very complete collection of large ice age animals, such as mammoths, sloths, lions, camels, and more!

In 2014, Tule Springs Fossil Bed National Monument was establish and it protects over 22,000 acres. Ice Age Fossils State Park is a 315 acre section of this area that just opened this year.

In 1962, a multi-disciplinary expedition was kicked off in this area known as the Big Dig and they used heavy construction equipment to carve enormous trenches into the sediment,. They were originally trying to determine if early humans co-existed with the Pleistocene megafauna that lived at Tule Springs, but that was disproven, and interest in the area faded. Later in the early 2000s, Kathleen Springer and Eric Scott with the San Bernardino County Museum came back to study the area and discovered nearly 10,000 fossils!
