Anyway, there is one town in the middle of Texas that has people who still speak German almost 200 years after their ancestors first arrived here from Germany. Yup, these are born and bred sixth generation Americans who can chat fluently with each other in a dialect of German from 1864. Today they’re almost all over 70 and there’s maybe only a hundred or so fluent speakers left but I got the rare chance to meet some of them and what I found deeply moved me.
