Throughout early dragon ball glimpses of the great ape have been shown as Goku's latent potential all the way up to his fight against king piccolo where he channeled this power to come out on top. Unfortunately, this concept was abandoned with dragon ball z where the focus shifted to the legend of the super saiyan until we saw Broly utilize the Ikari form in dragon ball super.
