I was in New Orleans last week for Mardi Gras and not only was it so much fun, but I also got to pick up some bottles from Louisiana distillers that I can't get in California. When I think about Louisiana spirits, I think of rum because of all the sugarcane. However, rice is also grown in Louisiana! And one of the bottles that I brought home was produced by a farm distillery that grows their own rice for their vodka and rice whiskey! As I was prepping for this tasting, I remembered that I had tried a rice whiskey during a Drammer's virtual tasting back in the summer of 2022. Both of these rice whiskeys are made from 100% Louisiana rice and are aged for 4 years, so this made for an interesting side-by-side tasting!

JT Meleck Distillers 4-year-old Louisiana Rice Whiskey Small Batch No 322 (48% ABV):
• 100% Louisiana rice grown on the farm distillery
• Fermented for 9-14 days
• Column distilled
• Aged for 4 years in new charred American oak barrels (52 gal)

Atelier Vie Riz bottled-in-bond Louisiana Rice Whiskey (50% ABV):
• 100% Louisiana rice
• Fermented for 2 weeks using whiskey yeast (8% ABV)
• Double pot distilled to 75% ABV
• ~60% ABV (120 proof) barrel entry
• Aged for 4 years in used casks (2 years in a 53 gal ex-bourbon barrel + 2 more years in two 25 gal ex-wheat whiskey barrels)
