Pricing, specs and delivery timing has finally been confirmed for the 2022 Tesla Model Y, where the all-new mid-size electric SUV has been priced $5000 north of its Model 3 sedan sibling, but that’s unlikely to stop it becoming Australia’s most popular EV in due course.

First revealed way back in March 2019 and already sold out for between six and nine months, the Tesla Model Y will almost certainly out-sell the Model 3, which offers less boot and passenger space, and similarly-priced rivals like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai IONIQ 5 due to less limited supplies.

Two model grades are on offer initially: the base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive variant, which arrives first from about August with a 62kWh battery, a single electric motor and 455km of range, and the flagship Model Y Performance that will follow with a larger 82kWh battery pack, dual motors and all-wheel drive, delivering a longer range and considerably faster acceleration.

We got the chance to poke and prod around inside the first Tesla Model Y vehicles to touch down in Australia, and also spent some time inside the third model grade – dubbed Long Range – which is expected to arrive here in 2023.
