The most important lesson about leading humans I ever received happened in the cockpit of a plane when I was a teen in flight school.

One of the first things they teach you in flight school is that no two individual planes will ever fly exactly alike, even if they’re the same model and came off the same manufacturing line. And the same is true with people.

However popular systems like the Enneagram or Hartman Color Code have become in leadership circles, a personality test will never be able to tell you how a particular individual truly needs to be managed.

That’s the real danger we see when managers rely too much on personality types to try to understand their people: once you put someone in a box and decide that you know who they are, you tend to keep them in that box.

In flight school, we had to always stay in tune with the craft we were flying: checking instruments, evaluating, adjusting . . . and repeat and repeat and repeat. Effective leaders do the same with their employees: observing and connecting to learn more about who they are, what they’re best at, how they’re doing in the moment, and what gives them purpose.

Just like with an airplane, there are no shortcuts—you have to constantly check their status, evaluate their needs, and determine the next action that will help them reach their goals.
