In this video, I discuss the central theme, characters, and plot of Franz Kafka's classic existentialist short story, The Metamorphosis.

Gregor Samsa, a commercial traveler, wakes up in his family's apartment, to find himself transformed into a gigantic bug. The sole income-provider, after his father's bankruptcy, at first he attempts to find some way to fix the situation and get to work. . . and from there, it just gets worse for him and for his family. . .

The Metamorphosis is a particularly important work not only in Existentialist literature, but in modernist Western literature more generally. Nearly the entirety of the story takes place within the confines of the Samsa family's apartment, where Gregor finds himself stuck after his transformation or metamorphosis.
