Traditional military instructional shorts were often dry, straightforward, and preachy. Soldiers frequently found them boring and thus paid little attention to them. Private Snafu was created to solve this problem. Its goal was to help enlisted men with limited literacy skills learn through animated cartoons. Because it was intended for a private military audience, it was able to avoid some of the censorship and restrictions by using minor cursing, non-PC depictions of the Japanese, and scantily clad women considered quite risqué by 1940s standards, which resonated more with the soldiers. By using humour, relatable scenarios, and a character that soldiers could identify with, the content was made more engaging and attention-grabbing, ensuring that the underlying message was understood.
