Just days after images of Emmanuel Macron in a T-shirt sparring with a punching bag were released, video has emerged of the French President posing in smart shoes and an impeccable white shirt in the Amazonian jungle.

Mr Macron kept up appearances as he sought a reset with Brazil in the first visit by a French head-of-state in 11 years, after spats with populist former president Jair Bolsonaro over environmental destruction and insults directed at his wife, Brigitte Macron.

After stopping in nearby French Guiana where he kept his suit and tie despite sweltering and humid conditions, the President kicked off the visit with the launch of a billion-euro Amazonian green investment plan alongside his counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Belem, the northern host city of a major UN climate summit next year.

Mr Macron then dropped the jacket and tie to attend a public event with Lula (who opened an extra shirt button) on the jungle island of Combu.

In a good-natured press conference among the greenery, Mr Macron awarded tribal chief Raoni Metuktire with the Legion of Honour, the highest French distinction, for his role as an "international figure in the fight for the preservation of the Amazon rainforest and the culture of indigenous peoples”.
