It might become quite obvious after using WhatsApp what different symbols mean on WhatsApp.

For example,
double blue tick marks mean the recipient has seen the message.
single grey tick mark means the message has left your phone.
Double grey tick mark means the message has reached the recipient's phone but haven't read.
Clock sign means the message hasn't left the sender's phone because there is no connection.
Last seen at a particular time could mean either the recipient doesn't have a signal or the WhatsApp is closed. If the recipient has an internet connection, then after sending a message, could you see a double grey.
Calling means the signal is leaving the sender's phone but not reaching the recipient's phone.
Ringing means the recipient's phone receives the call and can hear if the phone is not on silent.
