Scientists with the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems Longterm Ecological Research Project set up an array of experimental plots to seek answers to this question. The SALTEx experiment exposed an area of freshwater marsh to varying levels of salinity and water inundation, similar to what can be expected in the coming decades as sea levels rise.
