Getting on the Mae Klong Train
After we saw the Mae Klong Train pass by, we felt like getting on it, and we did it without thinking about it seriously. We thought that we could just go to the next station and then walk back. As the train started off, we had fun saying hello to the tourists in the market watching us pass, but then the train kept going and it didn’t seem like it was going to stop. We started getting more and more worried, and finally the train stopped at the next station, which was very far from the previous one. We were in a really rural area that seemed very different from the area we’d left.
We got off along with several other tourists, and almost all of them got on a tour bus and immediately disappeared. Only my family and I were left behind. This was an unfamiliar place where there were no taxis and tuktuks, and we were at a loss about what to do.
However, we realized that it was no use becoming pessimistic, and we found a coffee shop alongside the road. I suggested that we play janken (rock-paper-scissors) and that the loser go buy a cup of coffee. My second son lost, and his trial started. While he went to get coffee, the rest of us watched him from the other side of the street. He approached the coffee shop and stood there fidgeting, and a customer saw him and offered to help. The customer showed him a menu, but unfortunately he couldn’t read English. It was admirable to see him trying to make conversation with someone when they could both speak only their own languages, but at the same time it was funny and it made me laugh. We wondered what they could be talking about when neither understood what the other was saying. Then the shop employee came over to him and seemed to try to find out what he wanted. Next time I’ll tell you how this all turned out.

I have a cooking class in Osaka.
