Testing a Maytag branded, Fedders manufactured, 8,000 BTU window air conditioner model M6X08F2A-C. The unit was likely made in the late 90s-early 2000s. It utilizes 16.25 ounces of R-22 refrigerant.

This summer, we will be focusing more on existing equipment rather than obtaining new pieces, more specifically things I've acquired years ago and still haven't gotten to. In that spirit, we are taking a look here at this Maytag air conditioner.

I got this AC from a pile of free stuff at the curb several years ago, I believe somewhere around 2018. I was never able to formally use it at the time and had to stash it away for future use. Here we are in the future, and it's time to use it.

It's passed it's Spring 2024 test successfully. It powered on, albeit a little rough at first, and cooled with excellence. It appears to have a full charge still. It seems to be a low-hours unit with little dirt, but we will dismantle it for a full coil and fan cleaning anyways. Additional items of service will include checking the health of the capacitor and tying down the rattling capillary tubes to prevent any long-term damage. If the motor has oil ports, we will add oil, but I don't think it's worth trying to split the motor apart for full lubrication at this time.

Many people have lots of negative things to say about these Fedders units from the era, but I really don't understand why. These units were economical, reliable, and work quite well. Many I've worked with are even easy to disassemble for service. Admittedly the register is poorly designed on this unit and allows for some re-circulation, and the unit is outrageously loud on high, but I suspect a good amount of the noise is from the condenser fan and will be cut down once installed in a window.
