Here's my Resident Evil 7 retrospective review, looking at how it used movie references to win my heart and ruin my underwear. It took the series in a new direction, stripping away the over-the-top action of RE6 and going for a creeping, claustrophobic, first-person experience. As one of my favourite games of 2017 - actually, one of my favourites ever - I wanted to discuss how it pays homage to classic horror movies like The Evil Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Shining, The Fly, Saw, The Ring and Ghost Ship to build its world and develop its characters in both horrifying and heartbreaking ways.
