The Cupra Ateca is a performance crossover that brings the fun of a hot hatch to a more practical package. Based on the SEAT Ateca, the Cupra variant gets a potent 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pumping out 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That's enough muscle to propel this compact crossover to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
Coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, the Cupra Ateca has explosive acceleration off the line with maximum traction. The all-wheel-drive system allows you to put all 300 hp to the ground without overwhelming the front tires. There's virtually no torque steer as you mash the accelerator from a stoplight.
The dual-clutch transmission fires off rapid, crisp shifts whether you leave it in automatic mode or take control via the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Sport and Cupra drive modes sharpen up the powertrain's responses and add artificial engine sounds through the speakers for a more invigorating experience.
While blisteringly quick, the Ateca doesn't feel quite as tossable as a true hot hatch like the Volkswagen Golf R. The higher ride height and greater body roll detract slightly from its handling sharpness on twisty roads. However, the upside is a more compliant ride quality and higher seating position versus a low-slung hatchback.
Inside, the Ateca has a premium vibe with nicely bolstered sport seats, copper accents, and piano black trim pieces. The updated 9.2-inch touchscreen is crisp and responsive, running Volkswagen's latest infotainment software. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are seamless to use.
Practicality is on par with the standard Ateca, meaning you get a spacious rear seat and large cargo area. At 485 liters, the trunk is generously sized for a compact crossover, and the rear seatbacks fold flat.
The Cupra Ateca successfully blends daily driving comfort with thrilling performance. It may not be the sharpest hot crossover on the market, but it strikes an appealing balance as an all-around sporty yet practical family hauler. If straight-line speed and utility matter more than razor-sharp handling, the Ateca could be the ideal compromise.
