The Nike Dunk Low, introduced in August 1985, was initially designed as a basketball shoe but has since become a staple in the world of streetwear and fashion. With its low-cut silhouette, the Dunk Low was a departure from the high-top basketball shoes of the time. The shoe features a classic design with a perforated toe box for breathability, a padded collar for added comfort, and a rubber outsole for durability and traction.
Originally sketched by former Nike creative director Peter Moore (the same who designed the Jordan I), the Dunk was conceived as a natural evolution from the Air Force 1 that debuted three years prior. Bearing a resemblance to both the Jordan I and Nike Terminator, the upper featured subtle tweaks, a sort of middle ground between the two aforementioned silhouettes. Though often described as a precursor to the Jordan I, in reality, the Dunk was released slightly after the initial Jordan model, which was personally developed to sway Jordan himself to sign with a swoosh. With a last was based off of the Nike Legend—at the time Nike’s most successful basketball shoe—the shoe did not particularly stand out from the rest of the Nike line-up.
Over the next few years, notable models from the “Brazil” and “Celtic” Dunks to a trio of collaborative Dunk highs with Supreme helped the Dunk stay at the center of sneakerhead culture. By the mid-2000s, with a renewed interest in Jordan retros, Dunks began to falter; despite “Be True” retros in 2003 and 2012, respectively, for the most part consumers lost interest in the silhouette. On the other hand, its skate-specific cousin exploded.
“Be True To Your School” was Nike’s first attempt at marketing the Nike Dunk. It offered Division I college basketball teams and their respective fans a way to don their team’s colors. Each Dunk iteration focused on a specific colour treatment for respective teams, with the Swoosh having previously struck deals with the University of Iowa, University of Kentucky, University of Michigan, Georgetown, St. John’s, UNLV and Syracuse to confirm the Dunk High as their teams official shoe.
Skateboarders loved the Nike Dunk because it was cheap and accessible, and offered the cushioning, support and traction needed for the sport. They were appropriated because of their durability, cup-sole shape and general construction. They were also easily styled, a big pro for the community that was as interested in the sport as it was in the fit accompanying it.
Fast forward to present day, the Dunk Low has once again captured the hearts of sneakerheads across the globe. Virgil Abloh and his ever-popular Off-White imprint capped off 2019 by reinterpreting collegiate colorways with extended lacing. So far, 2020 has seen through to a revival of aforementioned “Be True To Your School” colorways such as University Red, Syracuse, and Kentucky Dunks, followed by two other “Team Tones” options dubbed the “Brazil” and “Champ Colors”. Additionally, notable colorways have dropped including its “Plum” revival and CDG renditions. On the horizon, the Dunk Low is confirmed to ramp up its collaborative dealings with imprints such as Cactus Plant Market and Kasina, in addition to delivering more special in-line releases.
