In 2023 jazz-flamenco is experiencing an exciting development. This is reflected on the energetic debut album of bassist/guitarist Juanfe Pérez. Its title Prohibido el Toque (playing prohibited) refers to the signs ‘prohibido el cante’ (singing prohibited) that were common in Andalusian cafés in the past. The bass guitar has a prominent role on the album. With this instrument, Pérez pushes the classical vocal and guitar tradition into new dimensions. In his own compositions he creates a wonderful playground for his musicians with either refined or psychedelic sounds, anchored in the old flamenco rhythms but with a vital, contemporary signature.

Juanfe Pérez (Huelva, 1986) studied classical and flamenco guitar at the Huelva conservatory, and world music at Codarts DMWC in Rotterdam. He cut his flamenco teeth as a bassist-guitarist with stars such as Farruquito, Duquende, Montse Cortés, Rosario La Tremendita, Javier Ruibal, and Turkish guitarist Çenk Erdogan, as well as in the jazz-flamenco bands of Alfonso Aroca, Sergio de Lope, Antonio Lizano, and Raúl Rodríguez. As a composer and guitarist he collaborates with the dance companies of Olga Pericet, Rafaela Carrasco, and Sara Calero.

After the concert there will be a late-night jam in the café. Led by trumpeter Antonio Moreno Glazkov, young musical talent, conservatory students and professionals meet for a thrilling jam session. A spontaneous improv from Perez and his band is not excluded!
