Well folks, we're back. After the landmark original generation, and the stellar continuation of it's second generation, it was time for Pokémon to take a huge leap. The Gameboy was a simple console with a lot of limitations, but the Gameboy Advance shed all of that, and thus, the next generation shattered that barrier and swung for the fences- a more ambitious, if questionable story, a stunning leap in color space, a bigger roster of Pokémon, new mechanics, and even some gimmicks that were legitimately impossible before. The Advanced Era was broad- I've covered it's middle children, Fire Red and Leaf Green, but let's go back to the first leap forward- Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions, released in 2002 in Japan, and abroad the following year. Through highs and lows, Ruby and Sapphire was an undeniable next step- ambitious, awkward, clunky, innovative, weird, interesting, and with a ton to see- while Crystal was my first, Ruby and Sapphire were the games that I have more full memories of exploring, and it's been interesting to walk back through it's hallways as the wheels of progress shifted Tajiri from the director's seat in favor of Pokémon's de facto face for the series for years to come, Junichi Masuda, who's strengths and weaknesses are perhaps at their respective highest and lowest points here.
