Fountains of Wayne's rise to commercial success with their hit song "Stacy’s Mom" marked a turning point in their career, despite the band's mixed feelings about the track. The band was formed by Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger, who met in college and later reunited in New York to pursue music together. Initially called The Wallflowers and then Pinwheel, they settled on the name Fountains of Wayne, inspired by a store in New Jersey.

Their self-titled debut album garnered moderate success, but it was their third album, "Welcome Interstate Managers," that catapulted them to fame with the infectious single "Stacy’s Mom." The song's inspiration came from Schlesinger's childhood friend who had a crush on his grandmother, blended with influences from bands like The Cars.

Despite the song's success, Collingwood had reservations about it being too much of a novelty hit. The band's subsequent albums didn't achieve the same level of commercial success, leading to a hiatus and eventual dissolution.

Schlesinger's talents extended beyond Fountains of Wayne; he wrote for films and worked with other bands. Tragically, he passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, leaving behind a legacy that transcends "Stacy’s Mom."

The band's members pursued various endeavors post-Fountains of Wayne, with Collingwood even working as an Uber driver at one point. Despite their disbandment, "Stacy’s Mom" remains a cultural touchstone, with its impact stretching beyond the band's other works.

While the song may define Fountains of Wayne in popular culture, Collingwood expressed a desire for Schlesinger to be remembered for his broader musical contributions, reflecting on the complexity of their relationship with their most famous track.
