Jones Tapia's earliest experiences with the criminal justice system date back to her childhood when her father was arrested and sent to prison for marijuana possession. She and her family would travel to the prison where he was incarcerated to share Sunday-night dinners. “I had other close family members that were incarcerated — and friends that were incarcerated,” she told The Marshall Project. “It unveiled the truth for me, that our justice system doesn’t work for so many people that look like me.” Jones Tapia left the Cook County Jail in 2018 to join Chicago Beyond and now works with young trauma survivors and the children of incarcerated parents.
