Guitarists love to improvise but often have trouble knowing what scale/mode they need to use in a given context. “Should I use the major pentatonic scale? The minor pentatonic? Where do I use modes? Is the first chord the key?” Etc.

Before I really understood theory, I remember being always confused by chord progressions… So I would simply use my ear to slowly find a scale that seemed to work. And to be fair, this skill - the ability to find a key by ear - is also a life-saver and is very important. But my approach to improvising and composing really changed and improved when I started understanding the rules of harmony.

And this all starts with the concept of harmonization of scales. While harmonization alone won’t give you all the answers, it is the foundation of chord progressions and understanding/practicing harmonizing scales and modes, will already shine light on many aspects of harmony.

In this video, I will give you all the FOUNDATIONAL TOOLS to UNDERSTAND CHORD PROGRESSIONS:

We will explore topics such as:
- The 3 different harmonic contexts and how to recognize them
- The harmonization of the major scale in “big triads” and trimmed-down triads
- How to analyze a chord progression and find the key
- The concept of framework scale
- The harmonization of the natural minor scale
- Etc.

We will also go through the process of analyzing a real chord progression together.
