Did you know that a "Hard-Start" is not the only answer to poor compressor starting solutions? The better question is, do you understand the poor starting condition to begin with? Yes there are times that a hard-start device can improve the starting capability of a compressor, but did we make the correct choice when looking for the solution. A hard-start shortens the inrush time by advancing the phase shift, creating the optimal starting condition in a very short period of time. This solution works well for compressors that are struggling to start on their own with a correct size and properly tested run capacitor, but are not a permanent solution. A hard start is a start capacitor plus relay that is connected in parallel to the run capacitor, in the event of a run capacitor failure the hard start may still function and lead to premature compressor failure. A soft-start device ramps the inrush current over a period of time, allowing the motor to start with less of an inrush current. This video demonstrates the use of a soft start device on a 14SEER, single stage AC.
