The GMC Yukon and its brother-under-the-skin Chevrolet Tahoe were completely redesigned for the 2021 model year, resulting in a larger cabin, more cargo space, and a raft of new convenience items. Yet the Yukon and longer Yukon XL have stuck with traditional V8 engines and conventional automatic transmissions. One bow to high fuel costs is the continued availability of a turbodiesel powertrain, a rarity in the segment. Both Yukon and Yukon XL are ideal road-trip vehicles for large families. Passengers will appreciate the quiet and cushy ride. The availability of four-wheel drive gives the Yukon excellent all-weather capabilities.

The Yukon, in its top Denali trim, challenges the Cadillac Escalade for luxury and features. A new competitor is the Jeep Wagoneer, which is slightly longer than the Yukon. Two other key competitors — Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator — are going through a complete makeover for the 2022 model year with the details yet to come.

Despite its 2021 redesign, the 2022 GMC Yukon gets some useful new features. A 12-inch driver information center cluster is standard across the lineup, and the well-regarded infotainment system now offers Google built-in technology. Off-roaders will appreciate the newly available 6.2-liter V8 engine in the all-terrain-oriented Yukon AT4.
