Synopsis:
During the winter of 1882/1883, Johann Strauss was asked to compose a vocal waltz for a matinee at the Theater an der Wien. It was a charity event, and the opera singer Bianca Bianchi (whose real name was Bertha Schwarz) had agreed to perform this waltz. Johann Strauss was visiting Budapest at the time and repeatedly performed privately with Franz Liszt in the sister city of Vienna on the Danube. It is likely that he noted motifs of the new waltz on this occasion. For Bianca Bianchi, these sketches became a waltz titled "Voices of Spring." The joy of the return of spring is expressed in this composition, as well as the gentle melancholy over the transience of the blossoms. The premiere of the work on March 1, 1883, at the Theater an der Wien by Bianca Bianchi and the theater orchestra conducted by the composer was a great and long-lasting success. In the orchestral version, which is differently orchestrated than the version for coloratura soprano and orchestra, the waltz "Voices of Spring" was performed on March 18, 1883, at the Strauss Concert in the "Golden Hall" of the Society of Friends of Music under Eduard's direction.
