So Across the Spider-Verse is out and oh boy - two fantastic comic book movies in a row? What is this, 2017?! After getting a bevy of mixed offerings, 2023 has finally brought some truly top notch cape stuff, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and Across the Spider-Verse.

James Gunn recently said on a GQ video that Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse was one of his favourite comic book movies of all time. That sparked a thought in me because I think the way both creative teams approached the Guardians series and the Spider-Verse series is very similar, and in a way most comic book movie series don’t really do anymore. In fact, with Fast Ten having just dropped and Mission Impossible 7 and Expendables 4 round the corner, its kind of something most action movies don’t even do anymore.

I’ve seen loads of chatter comparing Across the Spider-verse to The Matrix Reloaded and that makes so much sense, even more so than the studio’s Empire comparisons. Because Across the Spider-Verse is truly half a movie, set up for the finale due in March, but it is also the middle episode of one three act story. Through some clever plotting and character development, it’s taken what seemed like a fully standalone first movie and turned it into the first part building to a satisfying climax. Pffft, sounds sexy Spider-Man. But yeah, whats so good about Spider-Verse is that in spite of referencing pretty much every Spider-Man ever, it somehow never loses sight of its main character and what it means for this movie to be the second chapter for him. It feels like we’re approaching a proper conclusion, and we’re only on part 2 - which doesn’t really feel like a thing these days.

The MCU has created a race amongst Hollywood blockbusters to have as many actors signed on for as many movies as possible, attempting to weave cinematic tapestries full of crossover character and stories. Many fail, and maybe that’s why in this instance Sony had the foresight to cap off this story rather than launching a million different spin offs in the interim. We didn’t get a solo Miles movie, a solo Gwen movie, a solo spider-man 2099 movie, or a solo Peter B Parker movie - instead we just got Spider-Verse 2, led by Miles but catching us up on everyone and everything. A glorious melting pot of Spider totems coming together to create a sequel that feels essential, because it's only 1 of 3 rather than 1 of 30.
