In the late 19th century, the Sutter family lives in a remote cabin near the Utah-Arizona border. One day, their eldest daughter Charlotte is kidnapped by a band of Apaches while fetching water from a nearby stream. Her brother Sam witnesses the abduction and vows to bring her back. He sets off on his horse, accompanied by his faithful dog. Along the way, he meets an old drunk prospector who claims to know where the Apaches are headed. Sam convinces him to join his search by offering him gold.
