The decline of the Rust Belt sparked a mass migration by every since of the word, millions of people leaving their cities and states to try their luck elsewhere. In many ways, it has been one of the defining American population events of the last half century. But it’s a migration that’s often overlooked, as it all happened within the boundaries of the same country. Where did they come from? Where are they going? How has America’s history shaped the movements of its inhabitants? And what do people’s decisions to leave one region for another tell us about the issues the country faces? These are the questions I’ll ask in American Migration, a new series exploring mass migrations within the United States.
