Atlanta is both a hip-hop hit factory and an underground incubator. Kenny Mason nimbly dances his feet on both sides of the scene. Catch him at the wheel on multiple choruses of fellow Peach state spitter JID’s ‘The Forever Story.’ In “Dance Now,” Mason breathily chants like a sergeant; later on the album, he tees up Lil Wayne. Along with festival rager “Stick” - also a JID/Dreamville concoction - the last few years have no doubt seen the 29-year-old dotting up plenty of cultural haymakers. Arguably the coolest side to Ken, however, is the auteur one, which sets him apart as skillful and innovative. 2019’s “Hit” and “Angelic Hoodrat” foreshadowed that creative breadth. The first is straightforward Georgia slacker rap; the second broods with distorted vocals and demure drums. Almost sounds like two different dudes. Currently, he’s wrapping up his so-called Trilogy of 3. ‘9’ is the final installment, and it boasts the cohesion of a proper album. Fans across more than a dozen North American cities came out to witness his craft on The Route 9 tour this spring, which included a stop in NYC at Racket.
