Japan Just SUCCESSFULLY Launched A Cow-dung Powered Rocket Engine!

It has been demonstrated that the Japanese space start-up Interstellar Technologies Inc (IST) has successfully conducted a test of a prototype rocket engine that is fuelled by liquid biomethane (LBM) that is derived from cattle waste.

A series of "Static Fire Test" were carried out by the business for the ZERO launch vehicle rocket at the Launch Complex-0 of the Hokkaido Spaceport, which is located in Taiki, Hokkaido.

During the course of the experiment, the engine produced a flame that was blue and orange in color and horizontal for approximately ten seconds.

Based on the official announcement, the biomethane was obtained from cow dung that was collected from dairy farms in the surrounding area. This demonstrates the potential advantages of using biomethane as an environmentally safe rocket fuel.

Through a collaborative effort with the Japanese company Air Water, this environmentally friendly rocket fuel has been produced.

A regional circular supply chain has been established by the Air Water Group, with its hub located in the Hokkaido Tokachi region. This chain is responsible for the conversion of biogas derived from livestock dung into LBM.

In order to convert cattle dung into biogas, the cooperative effort involves the participation of local farmers who can use equipment that is located on their farms. Following this, Air Water will purchase the biogas and then proceed to transform it into rocket fuel.

In addition to liquid biomethane, Zero also makes use of liquid methane as a propellant, which has a number of benefits. Price, fuel efficiency, availability, and influence on the environment are some of the factors that are considered.

There are a number of space businesses, including SpaceX, that have decided that liquid methane is the best option for their Starship.

Combustion chamber technology

The rocket has a two-stage design with a pintle injector, which minimizes the number of components and increases combustion efficiency.

"The number of components has been reduced to one-tenth of conventional engines, fundamentally lowering the manufacturing costs of a rocket engine, estimated to constitute half of the overall expenses," according to the news release.

The pintle injector distributes propellants (liquid fuel and oxidizer) into the combustion chamber of a rocket engine in a regulated manner.

This approach is also used in SpaceX engines.
The combustion chamber of ZERO has been subjected to research and development efforts in partnership with Tokyo University and JAXA in order to achieve superior combustion performance.

The successful tests are a key step toward the actual launch of this small satellite launch vehicle rocket in 2025.

Satellites are going to be launched into low-Earth orbit by IST, which intends to use the fuel. According to the corporation, Zero's primary objective is to fulfill the growing demand for small satellite launch services across the world, particularly in the regions of Asia and Oceania.

"ZERO's space transportation service distinguishes itself with competitive pricing—at less than 800 million JPY per launch (in mass production)—made possible through an integrated development and manufacturing process," according to the press statement.
