Did you know this place even existed anywhere in the world?

What this place is is The Villages. It is the real deal when it comes to housing communities. A gated community it is not. What it is is an artificial facade - a bubble for old people. Inside these walls are 130,000 white semi rich senior citizens. It’s house after house, neighborhood after neighborhood. The Villages is the biggest master planned retirement community in the world, people. It’s also one of the fastest growing places in the country. And there’s a good chance you’ve never even heard of it before.

What is this place and what’s the big deal? We’ll talk about that. It’s everything that’s both right and wrong about Florida. And it’s growing every day. Here’s what it looks like from a satellite view. All of this is today what’s called The Villages.

This isn’t a city. It’s called a Census Designated Place. And it isn’t private. In fact, the street we’re on is a regular city road. The public can drive through this place and shop at its stores. We can dine here and even golf on the courses. It’s both exclusive, but inclusive. But in order to live here, you have to be at least 55 years old. And there’s also a six-figure barrier to entry.

Now where are we in Florida? The Villages is here, in a three-county area in north central Florida, about an hour drive from Disney World. What’s interesting about that is this place bills itself as Disneyland for retirees.

The Villages is wild, pal. But It’s not crazy seniors gone wild stuff. Sure, they throw parties and drink a lot, and there’s rumors there are orgies and swingers all over the place.

But for the most part, it’s just active adults. Like REALLY active adults. There are 50 golf courses, 89 swimming pools, a bunch of athletic facilities, and 90 miles of golf cart paths. And the clubs. There’s a club for just about anything you can think of. Want to ballroom dance to 80s music? So do 100 other people. Do you rebuild old cars? Lots of other people here do that too. There are more than 3,000 active social clubs here. For the folks that live here, it’s a chance to stay social and stay out of the grave.

They hold golf cart parades, pickleball tournaments, shuffleboard events, zumba nights. They gather for huge happy hours and go to their own churches, too. It’s like a permanent vacation designed to let people forget about their past lives.

Something like 98% of the population here is white, and 3 in 4 are conservatives. The Villages kinda broke onto the scene back in 2016 when Donald Trump was running for office. Their golf cart parades and rallies gained national attention, and really turned the spotlight onto Florida’s shifting political landscape.
