On June 19, 2023 we decided it was time to have dad’s old work bench resurfaced and avoid the mess associated with paint stripping chemicals and sanding. We began our search for someone with a large planer or drum sander. Luckily we were referred to Costa Mesa resident and carpenter Dustin Carratello of Salvage Inc. Dustin operates a very large CNC machine that is basically a giant computer controlled router that hovers above your wood project. When we arrived at his shop, we were instantly fascinated and impressed and wanted to share our discovery with others. Armed with only a cheap cell phone, we shot this little video promo.

Dustin Carratello has been a resident of Costa Mesa for 20 years. He grew up in Colorado and his passion is tearing down old barns and repurposing the wood to create exotic slabs. In addition, he travels all over the country to locations of big fires and collects exotic wood like ponderosa pine, cedar, redwood, black walnut and maple, types of wood not easily found in California. His products become tables, doors, cabinets, signs, cutting boards, furniture and so much more.

A Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine automates the control, movement and precision of machine tools through the use of preprogrammed computer software. If you want to learn more about the Laguna Smartshop 2 Pro CNC machine or have an extra $50K and want one of these babies for yourself, check out the Laguna Tools website here: https://lagunatools.com.
