On August 13, 2017, Carla Jean Lewis, age 55, was discovered fatally shot multiple times inside a makeshift grow room in the basement of her Niles Township, Michigan home. Her husband, John Benton Lewis, claimed two unknown assailants broke in and shot her before fleeing in her car. However, investigators uncovered that John had recently searched online for firearms and silencers, had multiple extramarital affairs, and stood to gain over $300,000 from Carla’s life insurance and retirement plan—providing a strong motive. Evidence pointed to his involvement: he had retrieved ammunition matching the bullets found at the scene, and his story about the intruders didn’t hold up under scrutiny. In February 2019, a jury convicted John of first-degree premeditated murder and illegal marijuana-related charges. By March 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
