Creepypasta is the modern evolution of humanity's storytelling by oral tradition, but how did it go from the biggest topic in online horror to a declining record of the 2010s?
GO TO SLEEP. In 2001 an Angelfire blog called "Ted the Caver" captured the imagination of internet audiences with its series of diary-like updates from an ambitious cave explorer haunted by the mysteries of his adventures into a passage called Floyd's Tomb. It was the first in a phenomenon that would eventually take the internet by storm – creepypasta – the digital evolution of campfire tales and urban legends.
Named for their ability to be creepy tales that are copy and pasted around the internet, these stories came to define horror for an entire generation in the 2010s, but how did creepypasta rise from seemingly nowhere and fall from grace so dramatically?
In this video I'll go over the entire history, from the early phenomena that set the stage before creepypasta; to the explosion in the genre's early days; to the rise to mainstream popularity with recognizable mascots; to the world of creepypasta narrations; to mainstream media adoption; to crime and controversy and eventually the fall from grace.
Along the way I'll go over some of the most culturally relevant creepypasta stories, cover important subgenres like haunted game creepypastas, lost episode creepypasta and ritual pastas, and discuss the legacy and future of this unique storytelling medium.
