The Tavares brothers had recorded one single for Capitol Records, "Check It Out" that charted at #35 on the Hot100 in 1973. Then they met writer producers Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who saw the band's heritage in great groups like The Temptations and the Four Tops and then set about using that history to bring them to the attention of radio listeners today.

The first songs they did together were ballads and a cover of Hall & Oates "She's Gone" which had peaked at #60 in its first run in early 1974. The Tavares version streaked to #1 R&B on December 21, 1974. Subsequent singles kept them in the public's eye regularly making Top 20 on the Hot100 until they scored another #1 R&B "It Only Takes A Minute" and it crossed over to the Hot100 peaking at #10.

They then released their most recognizable and enduring hit "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" a #15 pop hit and then "Whodunit" another #1 R&B and a #22 pop hit when they were asked to record a Bee Gees song for a little disco movie called "Saturday Night Fever". That song was "More Than A Woman" which the Bee Gees recorded as a demo and Tavares recorded for the soundtrack.

The Tavares version peaked at #32 in the spring of 1978.
